IGCSE vs O Level Chemistry: What's Actually Different?
By Naeem Bukhari
The Short Answer
IGCSE and O Level Chemistry cover largely overlapping content — the core Chemistry a student needs for either is very similar. The differences that matter in practice are more about assessment style and depth in specific areas than about the subject being fundamentally different.
Where They Genuinely Differ
IGCSE Chemistry, as part of the wider IGCSE qualification, tends to include a slightly broader range of applied and practical contexts, and its question style often expects a bit more extended written explanation. O Level Chemistry questions can be more direct in places, testing a specific piece of knowledge more narrowly.
Neither is simply "harder" than the other — they're testing largely the same understanding through somewhat different question formats, which is exactly why a student switching between systems mid-course can find the transition slightly awkward even though they already know most of the content.
Why This Matters for How You Study
If a student is preparing for IGCSE, practising with genuinely IGCSE-style questions matters more than the exact topic content, since the way a question is asked is often where marks are actually won or lost. The same is true in reverse for O Level. This is why resources organised only by topic name, without distinguishing which qualification's actual paper style they follow, can be less useful than they first appear.
