Cambridge, Edexcel, AQA or OCR: Does the Exam Board Change How You Should Study Chemistry?

By Naeem Bukhari

The Core Chemistry Doesn’t Change Much

Atomic structure, bonding, the mole, organic mechanisms, equilibrium — the underlying Chemistry a student needs to understand for Cambridge, Edexcel, AQA or OCR is fundamentally the same subject. A board doesn't invent different Chemistry; it sets a different specification over broadly the same body of knowledge.

What Genuinely Differs Is Syllabus Order and Question Style

Where boards diverge in practice is the order topics are introduced, which sub-topics get more emphasis, the exact command words used in questions, and how a specific type of question (extended-response, calculation, practical-based) is typically structured. A student who prepares only with a generic "Chemistry" resource, rather than one matched to their actual board, can know the content well and still lose marks simply from not recognising how their specific board asks for it.

So Does It Matter for How You Study?

It matters less for what to learn and more for how to practise it. Understanding a concept properly transfers across boards without much difficulty. Recognising your own board's specific question style, command words, and mark-allocation pattern is a separate skill that has to be practised specifically — which is exactly why topic practice matched to the right board, not a generic version of the subject, tends to make the difference in the final few marks of a grade boundary.
